Memphis Moms Guide to March 2017

Congratulations Memphis Moms, we survived the winter! Spring is here. The daffodils are sprouting up, signaling it is safe to come outside and enjoy the gorgeous spring weather.

How lucky are we that there are a ton of outside activities in the MidSouth this March for families to enjoy? Shelby Farms has FREE outdoor yoga classes for kids, Memphis Zoo has an outdoor, giant LEGO sculpture exhibit opening this month, and Brooks Museum is hosting Chalkfest, an art festival transforming the plaza outside into a colorful canvas. These events and so much more are in our MMB Guide to March 2017 below. 


March 1-5

March 2-5: See website for showtimes Aladdin Jr. at The Kroc Center Based on the iconic animated film, with an Academy Award-winning score by Alan Menken, Howard Ashman, and Tim Rice, Disney’s Aladdin Jr. is sure to send audiences soaring on a flying carpet ride. Disney’s Aladdin Jr. is a musical adventure filled with magic, mayhem, and the power of love. Performances on March 2-5; Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, at 7 p.m. and Sunday, at 2:30 p.m. All performances are Pay What You Can. March 2: 4:30 pm Dr. Seuss’s Birthday Party at Germantown Library Today is your birthday! Today you are you!…There is no one alive that is you-er than you! Join the Germantown Library to celebrate the birthday of beloved author, Dr. Seuss. Listen to favorite Dr. Seuss stories, sing silly songs, make crafts and have birthday cake in celebration of this famous author’s birthday.

March 2: 3:00 pm-4:30 pm Dr. Seuss Day at Gaston Park Library Learn about the extraordinary life of Dr. Seuss as we celebrate his birthday. Events include story time and crafts.

March 2: 6:30 pm Happy Birthday, Dr. Seuss! Story Time at Wolfchase Barnes & Noble Happy Birthday, Dr. Seuss! In celebration of the beloved author’s birthday on March 2nd, Barnes & Noble Wolfchase will host a special Storytime featuring coloring, activities and more. Don’t miss out on this fun-filled Storytime! 

Starting March 3-July: Nature Connects: Art with LEGO bricks at Memphis Zoo Starting March 3, build a connection with nature through an all new, award-winning traveling exhibit featuring 15 giant LEGO brick sculptures. The sculpture, featuring more that 460,000 LEGO pieces, took over 4,000 hours to build by hand. Nature Connects is included with zoo admission and will run through July 29.

March 3: 4:30 pm-5:30 pm Friday Frenzy at Germantown Community Library Kids ages 5-10 can join the library for a fun filled afternoon of arts and crafts. Put your creative side to use and artistically express yourself by creating something cool to take home! 

March 4: 9:30 am and 10:30 am shows PB & J: Peter and the Wolf by New Ballet Ensemble Dancers from New Ballet Ensemble will present a lively and engaging portrayal of the traditional story with characters representing not only instruments, but also five dance styles (Hip Hop, Ballet, Modern, Jazz, and Character). Following the performance, kids will get a chance to interact with the dancers and learn the movements of some of the animals. Tickets are $8 and include 1 child and 2 adults per ticket. March 4: 10:00 am – 2:00 pm Sensory World Memphis 1 Year Anniversary Party  Sensory World Memphis is the first autistic and special needs supply store in TN and surrounding areas. Sensory World will be celebrating their 1 year anniversary Saturday March 4, and you’re invited. There will be free games, music, food, arts and crafts, sales, and much more. 

March 4: 11:00 am Memphis Symphony Orchestra at the Library: Library Tunes and Tales Designed for 3-8 year-olds, this is the perfect opportunity for your young children to learn and experience firsthand how music and stories fit together. See the instrument families of the orchestra – string, brass, winds and percussion – in five small ensembles that rotate performances at a library near you. During each event, parents and children will learn about the instruments and hear a musical storybook reading. For library locations, see website.


March 6-12

March 11: 10:00 am -2:00 pm Chalkfest at Memphis Brooks Museum of Art Families are invited to join for a day of art-making, games, and gallery tours. Watch local artists transform the Brooks Plaza into a colorful canvas, enjoy live music and dance performances. Artist Victor Ekpuk paints a new mural in the Brooks galleries and presents a gallery talk at 1 p.m. This is a free event. More details can be found on the Brooks website.

March 11: 11:00 am-1:00 pm Spring Fling at Cordova Library It’s finally getting warmer outside! Time to think about plants and flowers. Come to the Cordova Library for Spring Fling where we will read about plants and flowers and decorate flower pots and plant something special to take home.

March 11: 12:00 pm – 2:00 pm Musical Theater Showcase at Hattiloo Theater Come enjoy the culminating performances of Hattiloo’s Musical Theatre Initiative program. Students perform excerpts from beloved musicals such as School House Rock, The Wiz, and Grease along with original works. Call 901-502-3486 for details.

March 11: 1:30 pm – 3:00 pm Children’s Tea Etiquette at The Peabody  Mind Your Manners Etiquette School presents a tea time for kids that will help make meals a more pleasant experience for everyone! The tea etiquette lesson is great for teaching children how to hold conversations in a group and demonstrate poise in social settings. It’s also a fun way to try different teas and wear your best head dress and lace gloves! During this 1.5 hour lesson, your child will learn the basics of tea etiquette and service. Various finger foods will be served along with 2 types of teas. $40 per person. Spots fill up fast, so reserve your spot here

March 11: 3:00 pm 44th Annual Silky Sullivan’s St. Patricks Day Parade The 44th Annual Silky Sullivan Beale Street St. Patrick’s Day Parade will be held on Saturday, March 11, 2017 at 3:00pm on historic Beale Street! Wear your green and bring the family for the city’s largest parade with bands, cars, dancers, floats and more! This event is free and open to the public. Arrive early to get a good viewing spot! March 12: 6:00 am registrations opens, 7:30 am race start Germantown Half Marathon and 5K Benefiting the Special Olympics, the Germantown Half Marathon and 5K will take place around the neighborhoods of Germantown. The 5K is a family friendly race; kids, strollers, and walkers are welcome. Registrants will receive a shirt and goody bag. Register for your spot here


March 13-19

March 17: 6:00 pm-9:00 pm St. Patty’s Day Party for the Kiddos at Trolley Stop Market Wondering what to do for St. Patty’s Day with the kids?
Bring them to Trolley Stop Market for an evening for crafts, Bingo for St. Patty’s Prizes, music, and fun! Ticket cost: $5.00 per child. Pizza, beverage, and dinner specials that evening as well! Call for reservations as they will fill up fast! 901-526-1361

March 18: Registration opens at 8am, race starts at 10am Daffodil Dash at Memphis Botanic Garden Kick off spring by running the Daffodil Dash! The race is a 3-mile certified route and also offers a 1-mile Family Fun Run. The Fun Run will begin on the great lawn, follow the pathway through the Prehistoric Plant Trail and finish at the exit of the Woodland. Registration starts at $20, $10 for kids 12 and under. March 18: 11:00 am-12:00 pm Hattiloo at the Library: The Magic Tree Benjamin L. Hooks Library will host Hattiloo Theater as they perform “The Magic Tree” in the Children’s Department Program Room.

March 18: 11:00 am-7:00 pm Memphis Pop Art Festival and Designer Toy Summit An event designed to bring artists, pop culture, and all things Memphis together under one roof. This family friendly event will also host the first annual designer toy summit. Tickets are $10 adults, children 10 and under are free. Military and EMS discounts available. 

March 18: 11:00 am-1:00 pm Reader Dogs at Cordova Library Is the library going to the dogs? No, the dogs are coming to the library! Come to the Cordova Library for fun dog stories, make a dog puppet, and read to our visiting canine friends. Who doesn’t love books, puppets and dogs? So this program is open to all ages and no registartion is required.

March 19: 1:00 pm-5:00 pm (film starts at 2:00) Free Day at Chucalissa Sundays in March, you can tour the museum and grounds and enjoy a family-friendly movie for free! Movie: America: The Story of Us (60 mins).


March 20-26

March 23 through 26: Check website for showtimes Willy Wonka, The Musical at BPACC Families are invited to come enjoy this Roald Dahl’s tale presented in the form of a musical. Follow candy manufacturer Willy Wonka and the five winners of the golden ticket as they tour the factory and learn how to follow the rules of Mr. Wonka. Performances are scheduled March 23-26. Thursday through Saturday, March 23-25, at 7 p.m. Sunday, March 26, at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $10/person and can be purchased here or call (901) 385-6440.

March 25: 11:00 am- 1:00pm International Storytime Celebrating Guinea at Cordova Library Did you know that the capital of Guinea, Conakry, gets over 12 feet of rain each year? Or that Guinea had mountains, deserts, and beaches? Come to the Cordova Library to learn all about Guinea, share stories and native foods, listen to music and play drums, as we celebrate this West African country. This program is for all ages and no registration is needed.

March 25: 7:30 pm Friends & Family Night: Riverkings v. Pensacola Looking for a great night out with family or friends, but don’t want to break the bank? Friends and Family Nights with the RiverKings is your solution. With each package you receive four RiverKings tickets, four hats and four vouchers for food at Chick-Fil-A Southaven for $35. March 27-31

March 30 and 31: 9:00 am-5:00 pm Discovery Days at Pink Palace: Extreme Deep: Mission to the Abyss Discover the concepts behind your favorite Pink Palace exhibits. Explore the mysteries of the ocean’s greatest depths. Newly discovered life forms, thermal vents, close-up views of deep-sea research submersibles, and shipwrecks, including the Titanic, are among the attractions in this deep-sea adventure! Included with museum admission, Discovery Days highlight the Museum’s permanent or changing exhibits through fun, informative activities for all ages. 

March 30: 7:05 pm Memphis Redbirds: Battle of the Birds In anticipation of opening day, the Memphis Redbirds will welcome the St. Louis Cardinals to AutoZone Park for a “Battle of the Birds” exhibition game, which celebrates the beginning of the 20th year of affiliation between the clubs! Starting March 31: 6:00 pm- 12:00 am Lantern Light Festival at Agricenter The Lantern Light festival is a six week celebration of Chinese culture featuring massive lanterns, inspiring performances, and incredible cuisine.  Chinese Acrobats, fireworks, mine for emeralds, mini golf, are among the many attractions at the festival. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased here. Adults/$20, Kids 3-12/$16, Kids under 3 are free. Military and Senior discounts are available. Runs March 31-May 7, Friday-Sunday.
