Summer is Here! MMB Guide to June 2017

We did it Mamas!! Congratulations on making it through another school year! Summer is here, and whether you are looking for events to beat the heat or soak in the sun, MMB has got you covered. Speaking of beating the heat, check out the awesome  H2OH Splash Park, now open for the summer at CMOM. Follow the splash park with a frosty treat from one of our MMB favorites, Mempops, and you’ve got a Memphis summer bucket-list kind of day!

We have compiled a huge list of events for June that will keep the summertime blues and boredom far, far away. Check out our list of family friendly June events below.

June 1-4

All of June: Nature Connects: Art with Legos at Memphis Zoo  Starting March 3, build a connection with nature through an all new, award-winning traveling exhibit featuring 15 giant LEGO brick sculptures. The sculpture, featuring more that 460,000 LEGO pieces, took over 4,000 hours to build by hand. Nature Connects is included with zoo admission and will run through July 29.

June 1 & 2: 12:00 noon I Dig Dinos at Pink Palace Museum This summer program lets you dig into all things Dino. See real fossils, prepare a dino dinner, walk like a dinosaur, and see just how big a T-rex really was! In 45 minutes you will learn about fossils, teeth, claws, skin, eggs, diets, and dinosaur sounds. This fast paced program is full of chances for you and your family to discover something new about everyone’s favorite topic, dinosaurs! Make it a dino-rific day! Purchase a ticket for “I Dig Dinos” when you come to see our traveling exhibit, “Jurassic Journeys on Land, Sea, & Air” For more information call 901.636.2437. June 1: 4:00 pm – 10:30 pm Memphis Italian Festival at Marquette Park A little taste of Italy right here in Memphis. 2017 Memphis Italian Festival features Luigi 5K (Saturday, June 3rd at 8 a.m.) spaghetti gravy contest,  live performances, games, and food. Musical highlights include Southern Avenue, Kevin & Bethany Paige, and High Valley. Admission ranges from $8-$15, kids 10 and under get in free. For details and festival schedule, please see the website

June 2: 10:00 am- noon Adventure Fridays at Memphis Botanic Garden Each Friday in June, July, and August, meet a naturalist to discover and uncover the mysteries and beauty of nature. Each week will cover a different animal or plant that may be found in your own backyard. Adventure Fridays are a drop-in activity, free to members or with paid Garden admission. For more information, call 901-636-4100.

June 2: 6:00 pm- 9:00 pm  Trolley Stop Market 7th birthday Trolley Stop Market is turning 7 years old, and we want to celebrate with you! This party is for the whole family! June 2: movie begins at dusk Movie Mania at Carriage Crossing: Zootopia Bring your blankets and/or lawn chairs, and pick up dinner from one of the many restaurants at Carriage Crossing! In case of inclement weather, visit ShopCarriageCrossing.com for updates. 

June 2: 7:00 pm showtime, doors open at 6:00 pm Charlie and the Chocolate Factory at Orpheum Memphis Take a break from the summer heat and head to the Orpheum for a family friendly movie! Test your knowledge of the film with our lobby trivia contest for a chance to win a prize, and don’t miss the drink special or the photo booth with special movie-themed props and quotes. You’ll also be treated to a special performance by our historic and beloved Mighty Wurlitzer organ. Costumes are always encouraged but never required. Tickets $8 adults, $6 kids. 

June 3: 10:00 am – 3:00 pm Day of Merrymaking at Overton Square  Overton Park Conservancy’s annual family festival is back with music, food trucks, arts and crafts, games, and lots of water activities to beat the heat! Bring the kids and dogs and celebrate summer with the Memphis community. The suggested donation for this event is $5. For more information, including parking and shuttle info, check the website.

June 3: 10:30 am- 11:30 am Toy Testing Lab at Knowledge Tree: Summer Avenue We’re inviting kids to help us test 4 Melissa & Doug toys in our special Toy Testing Lab! On Saturday, June 3rd from 10:30-11:30 am, young toy testers will get to play with and provide feedback on 4 toys. Each toy tester will also get to bring home their own Inspiration Kit! Space is limited to 25 kids per store location. Reservations are required. June 10: 10:00 am – 3:00 pm Star Force Day at CMOM It’s June, not May, but the Force is with you when you blast over to CMOM for Star Force Day! Wear your favorite sci-fi costume and take a photo with the galaxy’s most popular heroes and villains. Enjoy face painting, balloon art, and themed crafts. After you make your own light saber, visit the Phancy Photo Booth with some out-of-this-world props. Parents, don’t forget your cameras! Advanced reservations are suggested,  price for members are $3 and non-members are $18 and includes a museum visit. At the door pricing day of the event based on availability: members are $5 and non-members are $20.

June 10: 10:00 am- 2:00 pm Touch-A-Truck Downtown Memphis Bring the kids out to Civic Center Plaza for a hands-on opportunity to explore, climb and touch! Kids will experience vehicles from the Memphis Fire Department, Memphis Police Department, Farming and Construction Trucks, plus a School Bus and a Storm Tracker! Families will also be able to have some fun with the Grizzlies Claw Crew, “I Love Memphis” Photo Mural, Amurica Photo Booth, Makeda’s Cookies, Face Painting, outdoor games and a DJ! June 10: 10:30 am- noon Kids in the Garden at Dixon Let’s go outside and get our hands dirty! This fun gardening session will give kids ages 7-10 a chance to experience nature up close and learn the basics about planting and garden design. Snack and tools included. Reservations are required. $10 members; $15 non-members 

June 11: 3:00 pm- 8:00 pm GPAC Food Truck and Music Festival Join us Sunday, June 11, 3-8 pm for the GPAC Food Truck & Music Festival and Online Auction! We will celebrate Memphis Music with performances by Jason D. Williams, Memphis Jones and Proud Mary. Admission is free and the event is family friendly so bring your blankets and camp chairs (no coolers please) and head over to THE GROVE at GPAC for fun, music, and delicious food!


June 12-18

June 13: 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm Kids and the Kalimba presented by Ekpe Abioto at the Stax Museum Ekpe Abioto with his Kalimba (thumb piano) pays homage to friend and famous singer Maurice White, Memphis native and founder of Earth, Wind and Fire while empowering kids to dare to be different. This is a family friendly event. Bring your instruments if you want jam with the band! We go live immediately after. You don’t want to miss this one. This program takes place in the Museum’s Studio A and is designed for guests of all ages. For more information, go to http://staxmuseum.com.

June 14: 5:00 pm- 8:00pm Food Truck Garden Party at Memphis Botanic Garden: Beach Party Wind down at the end of your day with live music, family fun, and your favorite local food trucks! All events feature Live music by Movie Night, cash bar, fun in the Play Zone and food from the Memphis Food Truckers Alliance! June 20: 4:30 pm- 5:30 pm Tommy Terrific’s Wacky Magic Presents: Build a Magical World at Germantown Community Library Tommy Terrific’s Wacky Magic show will feature magic tricks representing great architectural structures from around the world, such as the Great Pyramids, the Eiffel Tower, the Great Wall of China, and much more. With the help of the Magician’s Handbook, the kids guide Tommy Terrific through a worldwide, magical adventure where these great structures are explored in fun and interesting ways. Along the way, the kids will be inspired to explore how they can “Build a Magical World” at their library. Recommended for kids ages 5-10.

Come say hello to us at the Carousel Court entrance between 10am-8pm and pick up some supercute treats, while supplies last! See you there!

June 25: 2:00 pm Eric Carle Birthday Party at Germantown Community Library Join the library for a very Happy Birthday party for Eric Carle. Read favorite stories by Mr. Carle, create crafts, enjoy birthday cake, and more at this event for the whole family. This is a free event for all ages. 


June 26-30

June 27: 2:00 pm Israel Scouts Friendship Caravan at Pink Palace Mansion Theater  Sing and dance with the Israeli Scouts Friendship Caravan as they spread their message of peace, unity, and brotherhood at this free performance! Selected based on their level of maturity, fluency of the English language and performance skills, these teenage delegates will draw you into becoming part of their exciting musical revue! June 29: 7:30 pm- 9:00 pm Patriotic Pops at Levitt Shell Celebrate the 4th of July in June! Patriotic Pops will be continuing the tradtion this year with fireworks and patriotic tunes. FREE music, great times, family friendly, food trucks, concessions, outdoors, and more! Levitt Shell strives to strengthen and build community by providing FREE music in a great environment.
