Memphis Moms Blog Guide to April 2017

April may include April Fools Day, but we are so not kidding when we tell you April is full of events for your family to enjoy. From family art events to Earth Day Celebrations, to Easter Egg hunts; MMB’s April event calendar will keep your family hopping from one fun event to another.

April 1-2

April 1: 7:00 am – 1:00 pm Opening day of Memphis Farmers Market Your kids will want to eat their veggies when they see the bountiful selection at the Memphis Farmers Market! Come shop our 12-year tradition of being Memphis’ premier farmers market. No fooling… April 1st is opening day and the market will be open Saturdays through October 28.

April 1 & 2: 10:00 am-5:00 pm Down to Earth Festival at Shelby Farms Park Celebrate what’s great about going green at the biggest Earth Day Celebration in the Mid-South! Join us for a day full of live music, high-adventure play, eco-friendly vendors, local/sustainable food options and clean, green fun! This year’s festival features 100+ eco-friendly vendors, arts and crafts, free fitness classes, live music, food trucks, and MORE! Admission is free, but there is a $5 parking fee per car (Members park free). For more information, click here

April 1: 10:30 am-12:30 pm Family Studio at Dixon Bring the whole family to the Dixon for Family Studio, where everyone can create unique works of art, open studio-style. The first Saturday of every month we will have family friendly projects and a large assortment of supplies to work with. Family Studio is a free, drop-in program. 

April 1: 2:00 pm-4:00 pm Family Art Workshop at Memphis College of Art Memphis College of Art will host a free family art workshop on the first Saturday of every month (some exceptions). Workshops will include drawing, painting, sculpture and more and are open to all ages and experience levels! This month’s theme is Crazy for Color. All families in attendance must include at least one parent/guardian and at least one child (a minor under 18 years of age). These workshops are free, but donations are always appreciated and go toward our youth scholarship fund (recommended donation is $10 per family). Walk-ins are welcome on a first-come, first-served basis. April 2: 2:00 pm Alice in Wonderland Tea Party at Memphis Botanic Garden We are all mad here! Join Memphis Botanic Garden for Tea Time in the Garden with Alice and all of her friends. Enjoy Eat Me treats and snacks provided by Frost Bake Shop! Craft projects will be sure to please any Wonderland wanderer. Snap a picture with our whimsical characters. Be sure to bring your cameras. April-July: Nature Connects: Art with LEGO bricks at Memphis Zoo Starting March 3, build a connection with nature through an all new, award-winning traveling exhibit featuring 15 giant LEGO brick sculptures. The sculpture, featuring more that 460,000 LEGO pieces, took over 4,000 hours to build by hand. Nature Connects is included with zoo admission and will run through July 29.

April 1, 2: 6:00 pm- 12:00 am Lantern Light Festival at Agricenter The Lantern Light festival is a six week celebration of Chinese culture featuring massive lanterns, inspiring performances, and incredible cuisine. Chinese Acrobats, fireworks, and mini golf are among the many attractions at the festival. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased here. Adults/$20, Kids 3-12/$16, Kids under 3 are free. Military and Senior discounts are available. Runs through May 7, Friday-Sunday.


April 3-9

April 7, 8, and 9th: check website for showtimes New Ballet Ensemble: Springloaded Coppelia Remix at GPAC Coppelia Remix is a condensed reinvention of the ballet classic set at A. Schwab’s on Beale Street. New Ballet Ensemble puts together a unique blend of dance styles into this theatrical production. Showtimes are Friday, April 7, from 7:30-9:30 p.m. Saturday, April 8, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Sunday, April 9, from 2:30-4:30 p.m. Tickets start at $30 and can be purchased here.

April 8: 8:00 am-10:00 am FedEx St. Jude Classic Fairway 5K  Before any PGA TOUR pros set foot on the course, you’ll have free run of TPC Southwind. And when you cross the finish line, you’ll be greeted with refreshments, pizza and live music – the perfect way to warm up for a season of events, giveaways, and great golf. Strollers and walkers are welcome, and there’s even a Kids 400m dash. For details and to register, click here.

April 8: 9:00 am race start 2017 GrizzFit 5K Walk, run, and dribble with the Grizz! On your mark. Get set. Register for the GrizzFit 5k on April 8 at 9am! Race entry will close on April 8 at 5pm. Packages start at $45 and include race entry fee, bib number, Grizzlies 5k t-shirt, and ticket to the game of choice. Strollers are welcome at the race, but are not allowed in the arena.

April 8: 9:00 am- 11:00 am 10th Annual Collierville Kite Day Get your kites ready and head to Hinton Park for Kite Day 2017! Prizes will be awarded for the most unique kite, highest flying kite, and more! 

April 8: Showtimes 10:00 am and 2:00 pm Miss Nelson Is Missing! At Circuit Playhouse Based on the books Miss Nelson is Missing and Miss Nelson is Back by Harry Allard, Miss Nelson can’t control her crazy classroom because she is just too nice. But when she disappears, her replacement is the hard-as-nails, detention-loving, recess-canceling, homework-overlording substitute teacher Viola Swamp! With the Big Test approaching, the kids suddenly realize how much they miss Miss Nelson, and they’ll do anything, including hiring a private eye, to solve the mystery. April 8: 10 am-1:00pm Easter Through the Looking Glass at CMOM Hop on over for photos with the Easter Bunny and greet some very special characters throughout the museum. Meet Alice, her furry feline, the White Queen, a very late bunny, and a hatter that’s gone mad! Decorate wooden eggs and don’t miss the chance to create your very own colorful Duct Tape Easter bucket to fill with deluxe Easter treats from the Candy Station. Enjoy themed face painting and balloon twisting from The Balloon Guy. Every child receives an egg-stra special plush bunny to take home. Advanced reservation prices: members are $3 and non-members are $18 and includes a museum visit. At the door pricing day of the event based on availability: members are $5 and non-members are $20. April 9: Race begins at 2:00 pm Earth Day 5K at Shelby Farms Park  Celebrate Earth Day by getting outside for a run/walk in Shelby Farms Park. After the race, runners are invited to participate in a tree planting at Shelby Farms Park or to take one of the saplings home to green up their community. $25 per person pre-registration through April 4, $30 per person on race day. April 10-16

April 14: 10:30 am- noon Bunny Hop in Collierville Town Square Join Junior Auxillary of Collierville, Main Street Collierville and Town of Collierville for dancing, games, Easter Bunny and so much more! Bring a can canned/non-perishable food to donate to those in need within the Collierville community! For more information,p please click here.

April 15: 7:30 am registration, race starts at 9:00 am 21st Annual SRVS Kids and Families 2017 Bunny Run 5K SRVS empowers children with disabilities one HOP at  time. Runners begin at 9:00 a.m. Walkers start immediately after, followed by the 1 mile Family fun run/walk. A great family event including children’s games, face painting, Easter egg hunt, a visit from the Easter Bunny! For more information and to register for your spot, click here.

April 15: 9:30 am check in- starts promptly at 10:00 am Easter Egg Hunt at Dixon Gardens and Gallery Grab your egg hunting baskets and head to Dixon Gardens for an egg hunt! The Easter bunny will visit, so bring your cameras! Arts and crafts are available and light refreshments will be served. The hunt will begin promptly at 10 on the south lawn, and check-in will begin at 9:30 by the Hughes.

April 15: 11:00 am- 9:00 pm 6th Annual Harbor Town Crawfish Festival Come out to the 6th Annual Harbor Town Crawfish Festival, hosted by Bluff City Pizza Company. This years event benifits the Memphis Food Bank and the Maria Montisorri School in Harbor Town. Hot Crawfish, Cold drinks, and Live Music! Bring the family! $5.00 Cover Charge, or bring 2 canned goods to benefit the Food Bank for free entry.

April 15: 1:00 pm- 4:00 pm Family Egg Hunt at Memphis Botanic Garden Memphis Botanic Garden’s Family Egg Hunt is an annual favorite, with prize eggs for adults and children alike, age-specific hunts for the little ones to fill their baskets, games, and more! April 17-23

April 18-23: Check website for showtimes The Sound of Music at The Orpheum The hills are alive! The Sound of Music is coming to the Orpheum for a week of shows. Just try not to sing along to beloved favorites like Do-Re-Mi and My Favorite Things. Tickets start at $25 and can be purchased here.

April 21-22: 6:00 pm-9:00 am Earth Day Family Camp Out at Shelby Farms Park  Celebrate Earth Day with an overnight adventure at Shelby Farms Park! Join us for a family-friendly campout in the Woodland Discovery Playground, which ncludes a guided nocturnal nature hike, earth science activities, sustainable arts and crafts, breakfast with the buffalo and more! BYO Tent, all other supplies are included. $8 per person for park members, $10 per person non-members. Register for your spot here.

April 22: 8:00 am-4:00 pm Bluff City Field Day benefiting My Town Miracles My Town Miracles is hosting its annual fund raising event, Chick-fil-A Bluff City Field Day: Get a team together and think tug-of-war, four square, potato sack relays and trivia. Chick-fil-A Bluff City Field Day is a fun and competitive day full of team building events, food, music, prizes and much more in Overton Square. My Town Miracles is a non-profit organization whose mission is to make an impact on the communities we serve. As a result, opportunities exist in our community for our organization to shine a light in someone else’s life, to provide a positive change, in a variety of ways. April 22: 9:00 am- 11:00 am Mother/Son Superhero Breakfast Bash Bring your cape and your appetite to the Mother Son Superhero Breakfast Bash at the Cox Community Center Gym. Recommended for ages 4-12 years old. Mix-and-mingle with your favorite superhero, enjoy breakfast, and participate in mini-bootcamp sessions by the Desoto Athletic Club & Parisi Speed School. Costumes are welcome! $30.00 for each pair; $15.00 each additional son.

April 22: 10:00 am Goat Cuddles at Millstone Nursery  As if April isn’t already full enough of adorable fluffy animals…Millstone Nursery is hosting a baby goat cuddle!!! Come cuddle with baby miniature goats and learn the facts and myths about dairy goats.

April 22: 1:00 pm- 3:00 pm Family Hoop Jam at Memphis Botanic Garden  Learn how to hula hoop with the family or practice some new moves with the expert hoopers of Co-Motion Studio! On the Great Lawn. All ages, any level. Borrow a hoop or bring your own. Free to members or with paid Garden admission. Call 901-636-4119 for more information. 

April 23: 11:00 am – 7:00 pm 25th Annual Rajun Cajun Crawfish Festival The Annual Stinson’s Industrial Rajun Cajun Crawfish Festival takes place April 23, 2017 from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. in Downtown Memphis on Wagner Place and Riverside Drive between Union Avenue and Beale Street. Known as the unofficial start of spring in Memphis, Rajun Cajun is one the few remaining Memphis festivals that does not charge an admission price in order to welcome all Mid-South families to enjoy a fun-filled day together. Enjoy live music on three stages from nationally known Louisiana Zydeco bands and local award-winning artists in Memphis, games including crawfish bobbing, eating, and racing, arts & crafts vendors, and a play zone for children ages 12 and under. April 24-30

April 29: 7:30 pm & April 30: 2:30 pm Pops 3: A Salute to John Williams at Cannon Center Memphis Symphony Orchestra presents the music of John Williams transports us beyond our imagination to new worlds through heart-pounding adventures. Your child is sure to recognize scores from their favorite movies like Raiders of the Lost Ark, Harry Potter, Jaws, and  Star Wars. Tickets start at $15. You can purchase yours here

April 29: 10:00 am- 3:00 pm Palestine Festival 2017 in Overton Park The 2nd Annual Palestine Festival will feature traditional Palestinian cuisine, music, dabke (dancing), fashion show, traditional clothing photo booth along with other cultural activities and vendors. Admission to the festival is free but please bring some cash for the various vendors. This festival is organized by a dedicated group of volunteers and possible with the generous support from the local community of individuals, small businesses and organizations. 

April 29:10:00 am- 11:00 am Cooking Up Fun at the Garden Memphis Botanical Garden Join Memphis Botanic Garden and Cooking Up Fun as you eat your way through the garden, just like the very hungry caterpillar. Kids ages 4-6 will explore whats growing in My Big Backyard and pick ingredients to prepare a healthy snack! Enjoy your treat while listening to “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” by Eric Carle. Big chefs (parents) will need to stay with your little chefs for this program. MBG members $10/non-members $15 per child. Adults pay regular Garden admission. Call 901-636-4126 to register.

April 29: 6:35 pm game Memphis Redbirds vs. Round Rock Express: Saturday Fireworks Head over to AutoZone Park for a baseball game and stick around for the fireworks afterwards! Fireworks are included with ticket price. Tickets can be purchased here.
