Memphis Moms Blog’s Guide to February 2017

It may be the shortest month of the year, but the Memphis area has packed February chock full of fun, family events! From outdoor dance classes to live stage shows of your kiddo’s favorite shows, a campfire under the stars to juggling shows, and everything in between. What’s not to love about February in Memphis?

February 1-5

February 3: 5:00-7:00 pm S’mores and Stars Campfire Party at Memphis Botanic Garden  Warm up by a cozy campfire and enjoy evening activities for the whole family. Go on a Constellation Hike, make a s’mores craft, and enjoy a yummy s’mores bar! Hot dogs, s’mores, and drinks will be provided. February 3: 6:30 pm Hattiloo Theatre’s The Meeting Presented as part of Orpheum’s Family Series and staged at Halloran Center, The Meeting is an eloquent depiction of a hypothetical meeting between Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr. The Meeting illuminates the ongoing debate between the two most towering figures of the Civil Rights Movement: how to achieve the same goal through very different means. This performance is recommended for children ages 11+. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased here

February 3: 6:30 pm Rock the Presidents at the Orpheum Childsplay will perform a journey through the history of U.S. Presidents told through original rock, pop, and folk music. This high octane, multi-media-filled musical revue looks at the lives of the 44 people who have held the highest elected office in America. Rock the Presidents is a 60 minute show and recommended for all ages. Tickets range $15-$20 and can be purchased here

February 3: 7:00 pm Mark Nizer in 4D at Beckman Performing Arts Center Mark Nizer, one of the greatest entertainers of today, comes to perform at the Buckman. Watch him throw laser beams at 1000 RPMs, toss ping pong balls 20 feet in the air using only his mouth, juggle burning propane tank, and more. February 4: 9:30 am PB&J: Iris Orchestra Brass at GPAC Join us for a brilliant, brass concert with musicians of the Iris Orchestra. From trumpet to tuba, this concert will introduce children to the members of the brass family by combine engaging music and audience participation. Children will have a chance to explore the realm of classical music and brass instruments up close and hands on. An instrument petting zoo will follow the concert. February 4: 8:00 am – 5:00 pm Bluff City Fire & Ice: Polar Bear Plunge & Chili Cook-Off at Mud Island River Park Heat up then cool down, all while benefiting The Special Olympics of Greater Memphis. This friendly competition takes place near Mud Island River Park boat ramp. Features chili cook-off, donut eating contest, polar bear plunge costume contest, polar bear plunge, awards ceremony, and food. $5 gets entrance to the competition where you will judge whose chili regions supreme. February 4: 11:00 am Memphis Symphony Orchestra presents Library Tunes and Tales Tunes and Tales is a fun, free, and exciting way to get your children engaged in reading and music! Designed for 3-8 year-olds, this is the perfect opportunity for your young children to learn and experience firsthand how music and stories fit together. Library locations include: Central, Bartlett, Collierville, Cordova, and Germantown. Check the website for more information.

February 5: 3:00 pm  Dance Class at Shelby Farms  This free class introduces a structured environment that allows children to use their imagination while learning about their bodies’ mobility. We will be dancing, learning about rhythm, playing games, and expressing ourselves through movement by exploring different styles of dance through multiple 6-week sessions. Pick and choose your sessions or join them all! No prior experience is needed. Experienced dancers also welcome! Recommended for kids ages 6-14. Registration is not required, but it is recommended. Class will meet at the Yurt at the Woodland Discovery Playground. You can find additional details on the website.


February 6-12

February 11-19: Check website for information: Memphis Open presented by Service Master Inspire your child’s inner tennis pro by watching one of the exciting matches. Check the website for player information, schedules, and ticket info.

February 12: 2:00-4:00 pm Family Fun Hike at Shelby Farms Led by a Shelby Farms Park Interpretive Docent, these family fun hikes are great educational recreation for adults and children of all ages! Reservations are not required, but donations are appreciated.Please remember your walking shows, appropriate outdoor clothing, and water bottles! No pets, please.  Meet at the Shelby Farms Park Visitor Center. 

February 12: 3:00 pm Dance Class at Shelby Farms This free class introduces a structured environment that allows children to use their imagination while learning about their bodies’ mobility. We will be dancing, learning about rhythm, playing games, and expressing ourselves through movement by exploring different styles of dance through multiple 6-week sessions. February 13-19

February 13: 7:00 pm Neil deGrasse Tyson: An Astrophysicist Goes to the Movies From Star Wars to Frozen to The Martian. An entertaining and enlightening review of all the science that our favorite movies got wrong, combined with some of the stuff they got right. Incorporates the latest films as well as some classics that you may not have known had any science in them at all. While my 7 year old daughter loves NdGT and has streamed Cosmos about 20 times, this event is probably better suited for older kids and teens. Tickets start at $39 and can be purchased here

February 14: 6:00 pm Valentine’s Day is for Kids at Trolley Stop Market Trolley Stop will be hosting our 2nd annual Valentine’s Day is for Kids Party 2/14/2017, beginning at 6:00 pm. We’ll have kid’s crafts, cupcake and cookie decorating station, heart-shaped pizzas, and Valentine Bingo for prizes! Make your reservation today! 901-526-1361. Tickets will be sold. $5.00 per child – for large parties a reservation fee may apply

February 17, 18, 19: check website for times Mid-South Sports & Boat Show Head over to the Agricenter to see some awesome boats, shop fishing gear, and kids can fish in the trout pond. Tickets are $8 adults, $4 kids 7-14, Kids 6 & under are free. 

February 18: 2:00pm Iris Orchestra presents Celebrating the Past: Creating the Future IRIS Orchestra and Clayborn Temple present a free, family concert in honor of Black History Month at 2 p.m. Feb. 18 AT 294 Hernando Street. IRIS’s string trio with area schools will perform and civil rights memories will be shared.

February 20-28

February 21: 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm Poppy from Trolls at CFA Kids Night in Southaven If your kid is anything like mine, Poppy from the Trolls movie has become quite the celebrity. You can meet her at Kids Night where she will be taking pictures and giving hugs. She’s a Troll after all. 

February 23: 6:30 pm The Wild Kratts LIVE! Young adventurers will love the theatrical stage show based on the animated television series Wild Kratts. Martin and Chris Kratt, stars of the Emmy-nominated Wild Kratts step out LIVE ON STAGE to engage the audience in a classic Wild Kratts story. Experience, live-on-stage, the astounding “creature” fundamentals, and the infectious excitement and inspiring quest of the Kratt Brothers that make the hit television series Wild Kratts so popular with kids and their families. Tickets range $26-$46 and can be purchased here.

February 24: 6:30 pm The Ugly Duckling Lightwire Theater and Corbian Visual Arts and Dance bring new life to a classic tale, Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Ugly Duckling.” Lined with electroluminescent wire, these well-known characters continue the Corbian tradition as they illuminate the darkened stage and wind their way into audiences’ hearts. The show runs 60 minutes and is recommended for all ages. Tickets are $15, $20 for VIP tickets and can be purchased here.

February 25: 10:00 am and 2:00 pm Pups to the Rescue at CMOM  Wag your tails all the way to CMOM for a meet-and-greet with your favorite heroic canines! There is face painting, themed crafts, and balloon art. Patrol to our stage to shake paws with your favorite pups and take a keepsake photo with them! Advanced reservation prices: members are $3 and non-members are $18 (includes museum visit). At the door pricing day of the event based on availability: members are $5 and non-members are $20. February 25: 7:30 pm Mississippi River Kings Chick-Fil-A Friends & Family Night Looking for a great night out with family or friends, but don’t want to break the bank? Friends and Family Nights with the RiverKings is your solution. With each package you receive four RiverKings tickets, four hats and four vouchers for meals at Chick-Fil-A Southaven for $35.
