Spring 2018 Mid-South Children’s Consignment Sale Directory

How I consign – Making the most of your valuable mommy time (part 3)

Snowpocalypse 2018,  Snowpression, Snowhostage 2018, or whatever other catchphrase you called your extended winter break with the little ones earlier this month, it’s clearly wintertime in Memphis. Now that Mother Nature has taken her bitchy firm grip on the families of the mid-south, what better way to break the chill of the freezing temps than to sort through closets full of bathing suits and seersucker shorts?  If you missed my previous Spring and Fall posts about getting in on the fun and navigating the consignment sale commotion, you can check them out here on the Memphis Moms Blog site:  Spring 2017 and Fall 2017.

In my first two posts on local consigning, I focused on how to get started, supplies needed, tagging tips and seasonal considerations of selling your items.  In this post, I’m going to focus on how you can make the most of your time and energy: get the clutter out and bank more money in your pocket. Here is how to do it.

Volunteer – several sales will give you more of your percentage fee back if you volunteer.  Some only require one shift to gain an additional 5 (or more) percent of you earnings.  Shifts are typically only 4-6 hours and usually there are several slots to choose from.  I have volunteered at almost all of the public sales at least once.  It’s a great way to learn the ropes from the inside and figure out which sales you feel are a better fit for you and your items.  Plus, you get the inside scoop on pricing what sells better where!

Can’t get it together, let the sale do it for you –  several sales offer “VIP” services or a “Mommy’s helper” service.  Depending on the sale, they will price, enter, and tag your items.   A few sales even offer to come pick up the items from your house and do everything for you. EVERYTHING people.  You just get a check in the mail.  New in this post, I have listed the ones that are offering a VIP tagging service.

Can’t get it together, let someone else do it for you –  I know several people, ahem myself included, that will price, enter, and tag items for other moms.  Call it a side hustle. Call it wine money.  Call it what you will but I call it ingenious.  Depending on the person, they will take in and enter your additional items, price, tag, and even deliver to the sale for you.  They take a smaller percentage aside from the consignment sale and you just get a check in the mail. Whoohoo ka-ching!

Enter multiple sales – It doesn’t cost anything to register for a sale.  I have a calendar I use to keep up with all the sales for the season. It shows entry deadlines, drop off dates, sales dates, and pickup dates.  From it, I can easily see if two or more sales overlap and determine what gets taken to which sale.   Some sales rock toys, some sales have item limits, some sales are boutique only. After sorting all my hanging items by gender and size on my rolling rack, I go through and segregate again what goes to which sale based on the different sales guidelines.

Deduct your sales on taxes – For non-profit sales, typically your churches that are raising proceeds for missions, you can deduct the percentage THEY KEEP from your taxes as a charitable donation.  Check with your accountant but we included ours in taxes last year and it our CPA didn’t blink an eye.

Consignment is a great way to purge a large quantity of items at one time without haggling with people over price, opening your home to strangers, or driving to a “meet” location.  The process is fairly easy once you get the hang of online item entry, the various tagging processes, and item limits from sale to sale.  My advice is to choose 1 and try it out.  Pick a smaller church sale and enter 30 or so items to sell. Rule of thumb, 60-70 of your nicer quality items will do better than 100 average quality ones. I promise you will be pleased with the results.

Here is what you need to know about Spring consigning…

  • Holiday outfits. Easter outfits, vacation outfits (a ’la Disney/ destination trips).  Think seersucker, bubbles, appliquéd, and smocked.
  • Bathing suits/ cover-ups/ sandals
  • Sports equipment and gear. Licensed team gear and outdoor sports equipment are big sellers.
  • Outdoor equipment. Bikes, water tables, playhouses, scooters.
  • Homeschooling supplies and educational videos/cd’s. Consignment sales are a great place to pick-up supplementary workbooks and learning materials.

Here is what you need to get started…

  • Merchandise tagging gun. I promise, you will thank me.
  • Hangers ($ store plastic kid sized hangers are perfect)
  • Large safety pins (NOT the $ store kind)
  • Rubber bands / zip-ties
  • Masking tape and clear packing tape
  • Sharpie pens
  • Ziplock bags – in assorted sizes
  • Heavy cardstock or hanging tags like these:  Merchandise Tags
