Fall 2017 Guide to Mid-South Children’s Consignment Sales

Oh, Fall.  I love Fall. I love pumpkin patches, hay rides, crisp cool sweater weather, SEC football and family outdoor portrait season.  I also love consignment sales.  If you missed my Spring post about getting in on the fun and navigating the consignment sale commotion, I encourage you to check it out here. Its chock full of tips and tricks I’ve learned over the last 4 years.

With the growing popularity of online BST (buy/sell/trade) groups, consignment might not be something you are interested in tackling.  BST group pages on Facebook and similar resale apps like LetGo and VarageSale have revolutionized the way we recycle our unwanted gently used treasures.  I tend to agree that the instant gratification of selling a cute smocked dress online is wondrous. However, there is an equally satisfying feeling when you check your consignment sale totals over a weekend and know you’re going to be banking a nice chunk of change for your little darlings outgrown clothes and toys.

Consignment is a great way to purge a large quantity of items at one time without haggling with people over price, opening your home to strangers or driving to a “meet” location.  The process is fairly easy once you get the hang of online item entry and the various tagging processes and item limits from sale to sale.  My advice is to choose one sale and try it out.  Pick a smaller church sale and enter 30 or so items to sell into the online system. I promise you will be pleased with the results.

Here is what you need to know about Fall consigning.

  • Toys Toys Toys. Pick the right sale and they will move. Gather up those orphaned train sets and doll houses and clean up that playroom.
  • Holiday outfits. Halloween costumes, Thanksgiving and Christmas outfits are huge sellers.  Think plaid, appliqued and smocked.
  • Sports equipment and team gear. Licensed team gear and sports equipment are big sellers.
  • Homeschooling supplies and educational videos/cd’s. Consignment sales are a great place to pickup supplementary workbooks and learning materials.
  • Gaming consoles. Get an upgrade to your system or sell your older Wii or Xbox gaming systems.  Let Santa know so he can can bring you the latest and greatest in multi-player entertainment.
  • Coats, school uniforms and school gear (lunchboxes and backpacks) are highly sought after Fall sale items. Who doesn’t need a backup lunchbox or 2, am I right?

Here is what you need to get started.

  • Merchandise tagging gun. I promise, you will thank me. Hangers ($ store plastic kid sized hangers are perfect)
  • Safety pins (not $ store kind)
  • rubber bands
  • masking tape
  • Sharpie pens
  • Ziplock bags
  • Heavy cardstock or hanging tags like these:  Merchandise Tags

Lorrin is a born and raised Memphian who juggles family life, a full time IT job, and an in-home sewing and monogramming business. She graduated from the University of Memphis in August of 2001 with a BBA in Management Information Systems. After several years in the corporate world, she made a move into the educational sector and is currently the Data Systems Administrator for an area K2-12 private school. That move turned out to be a complete blessing to her and her family. After dating for 7 years, she married her husband, David in 1999. She and David have 2 very protective big brothers, Reece (September 2007), Dylan (November 2009) and a sweet little girl Emma Grace (February 2014). In her free time she enjoys walking Emma, Cardio Barre, sewing, cooking (something other than chicken nuggets) and family trips to the beach. A little on the obsessive compulsive side, her latest addiction has been binge watching the Curse of Oak Island and Hunting Hitler on the History Channel.
