Working at a school and being a “type-A” personality, I thrive on a schedule. That first week of “summer break” throws my mind and body for a loop. I don’t know what day it is, what time it is, or what’s coming up on the agenda. It’s almost like I have to find myself again. While for some moms, this is delightful and well received, for me, it’s REALLY hard. I want my kids to enjoy their break and not be tied down to a strict summer schedule, but setting a loose summer structure each day helps me to relax and enjoy my break.
Some weeks I do have to work a few days. Some weeks the kids may have VBS or a camp to go to. However, most days are pretty open and unplanned. I want the freedom to meet with up friends, go to the zoo, or visit a museum. I don’t want to be so over-scheduled that we all lose out on the rest and rejuvenation that summer can bring. At the same time, not having a “plan” for the days can lead to boredom for all parties involved.
During the week, our loose structure looks something like this:
6:00-8:00 – Screen time, Breakfast, Lounge in PJs
8:00-10:00 – Clean up something in the house, Exercise, Free time
10:00-12:00 – Run errands, See friends, Go to the pool
12:00-1:00 – Lunch
1:00-2:00 – Complete a math page, Read a book, Play a board game, etc…
2:00-5:00 – Go to the pool, Play with neighbors, Other outdoor activities
5:00-6:00 – Free time
6:00-7:00 – Dinner
7:00-8:00 – Screen time, Read books, Bed
What does summer look like at your house? Do you plan every day out? Do you fly by the seat of your pants? Do your children go to camp? Do they take baths everyday? Summer “feels” like so many different things to different families. While I welcome the slower days and spontaneous play dates this season brings, I still long for a little bit of structure to keep me sane.
